Couples and relationship therapy
Couples, relationships, and commitment
Some disagreements feel new, but the steps are familiar. One person reaches for connection, another pulls back, and both may end up feeling unheard.
Dr. Sen works with couples and adults exploring relationship patterns, communication, emotional connection, and commitment. Therapy creates room to look at the pattern between people, rather than beginning with a verdict about who is at fault.
The pattern beneath the argument
Arguments are rarely about the dishes. Underneath is usually a question: do you see me, can I count on you, am I too much or not enough?
When that question goes unanswered, each person does more of what they already do. Pursuing gets louder. Withdrawing gets quieter.
A conversation with Dr. Sen
Relationships are a dance
Dr. Sen sometimes describes relationships as a dance. Familiar steps can develop between two people even when neither person intends the outcome. Noticing those steps can open a different conversation about needs, reactions, and connection.
Closeness, independence, and commitment
Some couples want more closeness; some want more room. Many want both. Questions about commitment can sit underneath years of smaller conflicts.
People also come to this work on their own, to understand why certain patterns repeat in their relationships.
A more useful conversation
Dr. Sen draws on Emotionally Focused Therapy, alongside CBT and DBT. The aim is a conversation in which both people can be heard, rather than a ruling on who was right.
Questions people often ask
What if commitment concerns connect with earlier family experiences?
That overlap can be part of the conversation. Individual family patterns are explored on the enmeshed family patterns page.
Do we have to know what is wrong before reaching out?
No. You can begin with what feels difficult or keeps repeating. The consultation is a chance to discuss the next step and whether the practice is a fit.
